DEX Designs Eighth SugarFISH Restaurant in Hollywood

If you happen to be in Hollywood be sure to check out DEX’s eighth SugarFISH restaurant.  Located in the historic Colombia Square building on the corner of Sunset and Gower, this SugarFISH location features DEX’s signature styling with exposed brick accents and perforated open truss ceiling.  While the chainlet with the cult-like following will keep the standing menu intact, expect this location to attract a neighborhood crowd that no longer needs to travel to West Hollywood or Downtown to satisfy their sushi craving.

  • Charcoal Hosts Hard Hat Media Preview Party featured in LA Magazine

    With anticipation building for Charcoal, Chef Josiah Citrin’s casual, fire-fueled restaurant, DEX was honored to be a part of a preview for an intimate group of media professionals.  DEX’s principal, Glen Bell, gave a brief lecture on the space, presented renderings, and reviewed floor plans with local journals while Citrin presented a selection of wines and tartares that will be found on the restaurant’s menu.  Keep checking back the Fall opening date approaches!

    Construction is underway! In our newest restaurant design, DEX is teaming back up with Chef Josiah Citrin, Two-Star Michelin Chef and owner of the highly-acclaimed (DEX designed) Mélisse restaurant in Santa Monica and co-owner of Lemon Moon Café in nearby West Los Angeles. It’s a modern twist in both
    food and design, with a cozy and inviting interior. Here’s a little sneak peek of the construction process.

    DEX is beyond excited to be working with Steve Robert’s of Charlie’s to design Hopsaint, a local brewery and restaurant opening in the City of Torrance.  Expect a casual, spirited environment where you can sit at the bar and watch the game, take a tour of the brewing facility, or fill up a communal table with a group of friends for dinner and drinks.  The design will showcase bright pops of color, natural woods, and a playful mixture of lighting fixtures.

    DEX is hard at work on its eighth SugarFISH restaurant.  This location will be in the heart of Hollywood at the corner of Sunset and Gower.  Sticking with the chainlet’s signature warm tones and casual feel, DEX is creating a custom trusswork solution to the give the space an intimate and cozy atmosphere.  Check back as progress continues!

    If you love SugarFISH, your heart will flutter for KazuNori, the latest hand roll concept from the same team.  Located in Downtown Los Angeles, DEX designed the space to highlight the natural materials you might find in a fish market, while still focusing on the warm, modern atmosphere the SugarFISH team desires.  Enjoy these photos of the space highlighting special touches like end-grain flooring, custom stools, Fireclay tile, and a floating wing feature over the dining island.

  • DEX Is Nominated for AIA’s 2014 People’s Choice Award

    DEX is thrilled to announce that their design for Badmaash has been selected by AIA’s Restaurant Design Awards as one of the finalists the People’s Choice Award.  Every vote counts, so please click here and show Badmaash a little bit of DEX-love!

    Glen will be speaking his design at this year’s Dwell on Design Conference, located at the Los Angeles Convention Center, as part of the RDA Finalist Panel Discussion on Friday June 20th, at 3:30 pm.

    The winners in the Jury and People’s Choice Awards categories will be announced the day after on Saturday June 21, 3 pm at the RDA Awards Ceremony (also at Dwell on Design, LA Convention Center).

  • Playa Provisions is Open!

    Jump on your bike and head over to DEX-designed Playa Provisions! The highly-anticipated opening from husband-and-wife team Brooke Williamson and Nick Roberts is the mecca for all things food and drink! DEX, who has worked with the duo, designing both Hudson House in Redondo Beach (2009) and The Tripel in PDR (2012), felt instantly drawn to the challenge of trying to update the corner lot formerly occupied by Tower 42.  With its beachside location and massive footprint, DEX set to work designing four unique spaces.  Here is how they breakdown:

    Dockside

    Set to open in the next few weeks, this full-service seafood restaurant offers views of the rolling sand dunes and skylines. (Alternately, you can take a seat at the bar and enjoy watching the fish housed in the back-bar aquarium.)  The interior is clad in cedar planks, giving the open and spacious dining room a rustic feel offset by more laid-back, but elegant features like hand-made pendant lighting over the bar and brass fixtures throughout. If the fresh air is more your speed, curl up in one of the outdoor booths or lounge chairs around the fire pite and enjoy your oysters and cocktails as the sun sets.

     Grain

    Round out your night with a stop at the whiskey bar tucked away in the back of the restaurant.  The small space feels like a sleek, but relaxed private room.  Curved, wood-clad walls, whiskey barrels that double as bar storage, and a subtle pop of color on the ceiling round out this intimate space.  Saddle up to the steel-clad counter top or take your group to the back banquette and let the drinks flow.

    King Beach
    Put your order in at the funfetti-style front counter and grab bright green stool at one of the communal tables.  The menu you takes you through your early morning pastry (perhaps the biscuit with ducle de leche?) and coffee (or the Mexican hot chocolate if you prefer) to your lunch-time sandwich (roasted chicken & brie is our pick) and salad (quinoa, kale, the sky is the limit ;).

    Small Batch
    After lunch or well-deserved snack after all the bike-riding, you can load up on hand-crafted ice creams and sweet treats.  The horchata-blackberry popsicles can’t be missed, but then again neither can the pistachio waffle-cone sundae!
